Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The UCLA Center for Prehospital Care at the David Geffen School of Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine seeks a Director of Phlebotomy and Community Health Programs to join our organization. The Director of Phlebotomy and Community Health Programs works under the Executive Director and collaborates closely with Medical Directors and the staff and management team within the UCLA Center for Prehospital Care.

As a key member of our department, you will have the unique opportunity to lead a high-functioning team in supporting the premier prehospital care education program in the nation. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of the program, from coordinating and developing various education programs to innovating and researching new learning methods. This role offers a platform to make a significant impact on the future of phlebotomy education and community health.

Job Qualifications

1. Current certification/licensure as California Certified Phlebotomy Technician-1 (CPT-1), California Certified Phlebotomy Technician-2 (CPT-2), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS), Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), or Registered Nurse.

2. Baccalaureate degree in health related field, nursing, health care administration, health care education, emergency medical services or a related field. Master’s degree (preferred).

3. 12 months minimum of phlebotomy (or clinical nursing) work experience in an inpatient or outpatient setting.

4. 12 months minimum of teaching experience in phlebotomy programs.

5. Experience with Community Healthcare Workers courses, programs and curricula, familiarity with the program approval process, familiar with CHW state/association certification process.

6. 12 months minimum of supervisory experience.

7. Demonstrated detailed knowledge and skill in phlebotomy procedures and techniques.

8. Demonstrated knowledge of program and student accreditation and re-accreditation processes with California Laboratory Field Services.

9. Current provider certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) in BLS (preferred).

10. Must have working knowledge of MicroSoft Suite programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

11. Excellent communication and instructional presentation skills. Both verbal and written communication skills with an excellent knowledge of English grammar.

12. Ability to translate complex concepts into understandable parts.

13. Ability to follow, support, and enforce all educational and operational policies and procedures.

14. Ability to foster a stimulating work environment.

15. Skill in working independently and following through with minimal direction.

16. Ability to prioritize tasks with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal direction and supervision.

17. Ability to adjust to changing job requirements, priorities and unusually heavy pressure.

23. Must be able to constantly stand and walk with frequent sitting; reach, lift, bend and use great majority of physical motion in daily activities; lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects, including the human body, weighing 11-20 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or a negligible amount of weight constantly; finger and hand dexterity and eye-hand coordination needed to handle and manipulate equipment such as syringes, needles, slides, test tubes and other equipment; talking and hearing involved continuously in patient contact; and visual acuity sufficient to demonstrate/provide high standard of care and work accurately with standard computer terminal.

24. Valid unrestricted California drivers’ license. Available to drive personal vehicle to campus and off-campus locations for supply pick-up or special projects.
