Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its leadership team. Reporting directly to the Department’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the CFO plays a pivotal role in shaping and driving the Department’s short- and long-term strategic goals. As a key strategic partner to the Department Chair, Vice Chairs, and Division Chiefs, the CFO provides expert financial guidance and leadership, overseeing a team of finance professionals dedicated to advancing the priorities of both the Department and the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM). This role encompasses comprehensive oversight of all funding sources, including compensation plans, contracts and grants, gifts and endowments, indirect cost recovery, general funds, and sales and service revenue. The CFO will lead critical functions such as financial planning and analysis, general accounting and reporting, as well as internal controls, compliance, and risk management, ensuring fiscal integrity and strategic alignment across the Department.

Annual range: $92,600-$202,200

  

Job Qualifications

Required: 

  • 7+ years of progressive experience in financial management roles; 
  • Strong knowledge of financial and accounting concepts, including basic framework of the P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flow; 
  • Expertise in fund accounting and performance metrics of research-intensive health systems desirable; 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a desire to understand the issues; 
  • Creative problem solver that can identify sources of information from disparate sources and deliver comprehensive, balanced, and actionable insights; 
  • Advanced Excel and Power Point skills; 
  • Excellent customer service interpersonal skills and ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization; Excellent communication skills (written, verbal and presentation); 
  • Experience with all types of award mechanisms, including grants, contracts; subcontracts, and cooperative agreements; 
  • Ability to perform highly complex financial analysis and customized reporting. 

Strongly Preferred:

  • MBA in Finance & Accounting focus; 5+ years of managing a finance department; 
  • Fund accounting experience.
