Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Prepare and set up surgical instrumentation and equipment according to department standards and surgeon preference cards.

  • Maintain a sterile field and ensure all surgical instruments and supplies are ready and functioning properly.

  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team during procedures, providing instruments and supplies promptly.

  • Implement and adhere to aseptic techniques, including practices to prevent retained foreign objects and ensure safe medication labeling and handling.

  • Handle specimens safely and in accordance with established protocols.

  • Participate in ongoing training and education to stay current with best practices and technological advancements.

  • Collaborate effectively with surgeons, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Job Qualifications

Required:
  • Two (2) years of surgical technician experience.
  • BLS certification from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
  • Proficiency in maintaining a sterile field and recognizing breaches in sterility or potential complications.
  • Ability to set up and organize surgical trays and equipment based on standard operating procedures.
  • Skill in the safe handling, preparation, and passing of surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to anticipate surgeon and team needs throughout procedures.
  • Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, terminology, and the appropriate use and care of instruments.
  • Working knowledge of aseptic technique, operating room sanitation, and OR equipment, instrumentation, and furniture.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with surgical team members to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, recognize emergencies, and take appropriate action under supervision or independently.
  • Capacity to adapt to shift changes to meet departmental needs.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, push/pull carts, and stand for extended periods.
  • Willingness and ability to respond to emergency or disaster calls.
  • Ability to learn new procedures and continuously improve skills through training and development.
  • Ability to follow set procedures with attention to sequence, detail, and consistency.
Preferred
  • NBSTSA Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential.
