Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Assistant Director for DGSOM Disability Services ensures access to educational opportunities for medical students with disabilities by interpreting medical and psychological documentation and recommending appropriate accommodations. They apply specialized expertise in disability access within medical and health science education, both in didactic and clinical settings. This includes assessing documentation in line with University, State, and Federal guidelines and determining whether accommodations align with DGSOM and LCME standards.

In collaboration with the Director, the Assistant Director provides disability-related counseling, makes referrals to on- and off-campus resources, leads support groups and workshops on disability management, and develops tools and resources in conjunction with the Center for Accessible Education (CAE). They also serve as a liaison to departments and programs, helping coordinate services and deliver disability awareness presentations to faculty, staff, and students.

The Assistant Director supports broader CAE efforts by participating in accommodation appeal reviews for health sciences, attending team huddles, and developing joint programming. They also build relationships with campus departments, external agencies, and national organizations. Additional responsibilities include research and development of training materials and evaluation tools, and other duties as assigned by the Chief of Staff, Director of Disability Services, or CAE leadership.

Salary Range: $76,200.00 - $158,800.00 Annually


Job Qualifications

All Required:

  • Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible, related professional experience in disability services, preferably in a post-secondary or closely related setting.
  • Advanced degree in higher education/student affairs is preferred or an equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • Knowledge of ADA/504 and related state laws. Knowledge of FERPA regulations and Title IX protections.
  • Knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA compliance rules and Title II updates. Strict adherence to the Federal
  • Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • Knowledge and experience navigating, negotiating, and securing resources available to medical students through disability service offices. Maintain a current and working knowledge of assistive technology/adaptive equipment and train students on use of technologies. Assist the Director with ensuring the office is stocked with appropriate equipment and tools for loan to eligible students.
  • Knowledge of educational settings unique to medical education, such as clinical skills labs requiring specific equipment, physical spaces, and learning goals, in order to successfully advocate for accessibility.
  • Interpersonal and leadership skills such that the candidate can work effectively with staff, faculty, students and/or administration and communicate to all stakeholders in a clear and concise manner both verbally and in all written communications.
  • Knowledgeable about the unique and diverse challenges that students with disabilities and chronic illnesses face throughout the various stages in their education.
  • Self-starting, self-directed, resourceful, flexible, dependable, proactive, ability to work independently within enterprise guidelines, strong time management skills and motivated in performing and excelling in all job responsibilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with campus partners, professionally and compassionately with students, and with the highest levels of discretion. Ability to maintain calm and professional demeanor when communicating with disgruntled students or facing an emergency situation.
  • Able to initiate and maintain positive, cooperative relationships with others
  • Skill in analyzing information or situations to define a problem, identify relevant concerns, formulate logical, objective, and timely conclusions and alternatives.
  • Ability to read policies and procedures and interpret the information clearly and accurately to students and other internal/external customers in a manner that is easy to understand.
  • Ability to appropriately manage challenging, confidential, private, and sensitive situations. Detail oriented, accurate, prioritize assignments effectively, synthesize information quickly and accurately, able to identify problems before they happen and propose solutions.
  • Candidate must be proficient in working in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment requiring strong teamworking skills as well as the ability to adapt to shifting and/or competing priorities and multiple deadlines despite frequent interruptions.
  • Familiarity or experience in medical education, health professions education and/or an academic environment.
  • Treat confidential and private information appropriately and maintain FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) certification as appropriate, maintain in compliance with all institutionally required trainings.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating environment and openness to new and evolving technology and technological solutions.
