Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Veterinarian independently performs a full range of veterinary duties, including the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of laboratory animals. While routine cases are managed autonomously, complex or challenging cases may require consultation with senior veterinary staff. This position ensures adherence to approved animal use protocols and provides expert guidance to UCLA’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Performing anesthesia and surgical procedures, including pre-operative and post-operative care.
  • Advising and training research personnel on the selection and administration of anesthetics, analgesics, sedatives, tranquilizers, and other medications.
  • Educating research staff on aseptic techniques, surgical procedures, post-operative care, animal handling, and husbandry practices.
  • Responding to routine and emergency veterinary care requests, including participation in an on-call rotation covering nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of animal care and welfare while supporting the advancement of scientific research at UCLA.


Annual Salary Range: $92,600.00 - 202,200.00



Job Qualifications

Required:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD)
  • Board eligible or working toward board eligibility by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Ability to communicate effectively on a group presentation basis to train research technicians andhusbandry staff.                              
  • Knowledge in the practice of veterinary medicine and especially laboratory animal medicine.                                                                                               
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with technical staff, management, and faculty researchers and their staff.
  • Ability to communicate on a one-on-one basis as an aid to the diagnosis of disease problems, and ability to seek out proper veterinary medical treatment.        
  • Skill in working as part of a team, providing veterinary medical care.
  • Ability to communicate with researchers, technicians, and lay personnel.
  • Interpersonal skills sufficient to diplomatically interact to resolve conflicts which occur when Laboratory Animal policies and procedures are violated.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act.        
  • Detailed knowledge of the PHS Policy.              
  • Knowledge of husbandry of laboratory animals          
  • Knowledge of general surgical procedures         
  • Skill in performing surgery on animals.            
  • Skill in performing necropsies on laboratory animals.    
  • Skill in therapeutic treatment of various laboratory     animals.
  • Skill in the diagnosis of disease in laboratory animals.    
  • Detailed knowledge of pre- and post-surgical care of laboratory animals.


Preferred:
  • General knowledge of university personnel policies.
  • Skill in writing reports and correspondence.
