Primary Duties and Responsibilities

We’re seeking a detail-oriented Scribe to support our Ophthalmology Calabasas clinic. In this vital role, you’ll assist with documenting patient care and streamlining administrative tasks to help ensure efficient, high-quality service. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Document patient history, physical exam findings, progress notes, and procedure notes under physician direction
  • Record diagnostic and laboratory results, consultations, and follow-up care plans
  • Ensure timely and accurate completion of physician medical record documentation (electronic or paper)
  • Collaborate closely with physicians and the medical team to support patient care
  • Assist with written and verbal patient education or resources
  • Provide general administrative or clerical support

Salary Range: $23.58-32.99 Hourly


This is a part-time limited position scheduled to end 1 year from hire date. May convert to Career. 



Senate Bill 525 was signed into law by Governor Newsom in October 2023. Starting July 1, 2025, SB525 sets a new $24 minimum wage for nonexempt healthcare workers and raises the exempt employee salary threshold to $1,440/week (equivalent to $6,240/month or $74,880/year). 

1. As defined under SB525, healthcare workers are defined as employees who are involved in the provision of “health care services,” which means “patient care-related services including nursing; caregiving; services provided by medical residents, interns, or fellows; technical and ancillary services; janitorial work; housekeeping; grounds keeping; guard duties; business office clerical work; food services; laundry; medical coding and billing; call center and warehouse work; scheduling; and gift shop work; but only where such services support patient care”.

2. Employees (career, contract, student, per diem) in the UCLA Health medical facilities (e.g. Ronald Reagan Medical Center, Santa Monica UCLA Hospital, Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, etc.) meet these criteria.

Job Qualifications

Required:
  • Ability to perform under the pressure of frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Ability to proofread very detailed materials and monitor work accurately.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively and diplomatically interact with others.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to speak clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information.
  • Skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to maintain equanimity in the face of resistance, indifference or hostility.
  • Knowledge and skill in using various computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook email and database software.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, faculty, residents, nurses, students, University representatives, patients and the public.
  •  Willingness to work a flexible schedule.
  •  Ability to organize and track multiple records and requests and follow through in a timely manner.
  •  Ability to handle confidential material while protecting its strict confidentiality.

 

Preferred:
  •  A minimum of two years of scribe or related physician support experience.
  •  Previous experience with electronic medical records such as Medhost, EPIC, Cerner, etc.
  •  Detailed knowledge of medical terminology and the ability to distinguish different exams and medical diagnoses is required.
  •  Knowledge of E&M codes and the level of documentation necessary for each billing level.


As a condition of employment, the final candidate who accepts a conditional offer of employment will be required to disclose if they have been subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct; received notice of any allegations or are currently the subject of any administrative or disciplinary proceedings involving misconduct; have left a position after receiving notice of allegations or while under investigation in an administrative or disciplinary proceeding involving misconduct; or have filed an appeal of a finding of misconduct with a previous employer.
