Primary Duties and Responsibilities

As a Patient Transport Specialist, you will play an essential role in supporting safe, efficient patient care throughout the Medical Center. You will transport patients, equipment, and critical items across the hospital while ensuring comfort, safety, and exceptional service.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care Support

* Safely transport patients via gurney, bed, wheelchair, or crib to various hospital areas
* Transport patients requiring oxygen (mask, cannula, aerosols) and follow proper protocols
* Move isolation patients using appropriate PPE and infection‑control procedures
* Follow Safe Patient Handling procedures and use proper lift equipment
* Provide age‑appropriate support and maintain sensitivity to patient and family needs

Operational & Support Duties

* Pick up and deliver specimens, blood products, medical equipment, medications, records, and other items as assigned
* Collaborate with patient escorts, nurses, physicians, and other hospital staff
* Report unusual situations or issues to the supervisor or manager
* Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures
* Maintain professional appearance and conduct at all times
* Retrieve and return unused gurneys and wheelchairs to designated areas
* Train new hires and volunteers on transport basics and safe equipment use
* Transport deceased patients to the morgue using appropriate equipment; upon certification, operate the morgue van for inter‑facility transfers
 
Salary Range: $21.12-27.85 Hourly
Effective 06/22/2025, employees represented by the AFSCME Union will receive a minimum wage of $25. In accordance with this agreement, as the offer amount outlined in this letter falls below the minimum salary required, we will provide a supplementary amount to ensure compliance. The total compensation package, including this supplement, will meet the minimum salary standard.

Job Qualifications

Required:

  • Must have a current and valid BLS certification directly from the American Heart Association or Red Cross.
  • Ability to perform all physical requirements pertaining to the transport of patients in beds, gurneys, and wheelchairs as well as some heavy equipment.
  • Able to lift, push, pull a minimum of 150 pounds.
  • Skill in reading and writing in Standard English text such as call slips and miscellaneous clerical duties.
  • Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information needed in the transport process of all patients and other items.
  • Ability to understand medical terminology.
  • Ability to operate medical equipment to perform certain job duties.
  • Ability to transport patients in a safe, efficient, and professional manner appropriate to good public and patient relations.
  • Ability to accept new responsibilities and work harmoniously with all hospital staff.
 
Preferred:
  • Previous experience on a transport or lift team.
  • Acute care hospital experience and patient care needs.
